Following Orders

William Saletan wonders why Governor Christie (like other Republicans) has a principled objection to ordering people to buy health insurance, but not to ordering them to evacuate in advance of a hurricane. This doesn’t seem like a tough question to me. I can’t speak for Christie or any of the other Republicans Saletan mentions, but it seems to me that there’s a strong presumption against the government’s bossing people around. In the case of evacuations, that presumption is overcome.

In the case of health insurance, it isn’t.
