The State of Things Down the Ballot

by John Hood

Conservatives despondent about the presidential and Senate results may be hoping for better news down the ballot. There is some to be found, but not a great deal. The biggest GOP victories were in North Carolina, where voters elected the first Republican governor in 20 years — by a twelve-point margin, no less — and gave the GOP even larger majorities in the legislature than it won in 2010. Republicans also appear to have captured the Arkansas senate for the first time since Reconstruction. On the other hand, Democrats have recaptured both houses of the Minnesota legislature and the Colorado house. I’ll update ballot-measure results as they firm up. Medical marijuana and same-sex marriage appear to be faring well. Tax increases, not so much.
