Flake Heads to the Senate

Congressman Jeff Flake, a respected fiscal hawk on Capitol Hill, won Arizona’s open Senate seat. He beat Democrat Richard Carmona, a former surgeon general. Flake owes his victory to his strong performance in Phoenix and its suburbs. Carmona, for his part, did well in the Tucson and Flagstaff areas, but lost Maricopa County by nine points. Late in the campaign, Bill Clinton stumped for Carmona, who was appointed surgeon general by President George W. Bush, but it wasn’t enough to win over Arizona’s moderate swing voters.

Republican Jon Kyl, who is retiring, currently holds the seat.
