Catalonia: What Now?

by Andrew Stuttaford

Basically the rightwing nationalists lost ground, and the leftwing nationalists gained ground. Together they could move the march to independence along (or try to: the obstacles are formidable), but no one seems very confident that these two groups can work together.

Open Europe has a typically  good summary of the legal and political  issues involved here, and has the honesty to admit that there is a great deal that is “not clear”.

I’ll say.

Put it like this. Catalonian independence is probably closer than it was, but remains a long way off,  and Spanish (and Catalan) politics just got a whole lot more complicated.
