God Bless the NRA

No, not that NRA. This NRA

Eliana, that football-team marching band spelling out “Obama” had nothing on Hollywood. The film is Footlight Parade (1933), starring James Cagney, Joan Blondell, and Ruby Keeler; this clip is from the final “Shanghai Lil” number; music and lyrics by Harry Warren and Al Dubin. Amazingly, Footlight Parade wasn’t even the best Busby Berkeley musical of that year — that honor, of course, is reserved for the greatest movie ever made, Gold Diggers of 1933, which famously features this surrealistic moment in Tin Pan Alley history:

They don’t make ’em like they used to.
