Boehner’s Slides

by Robert Costa

On Wednesday morning, Speaker John Boehner huddled with House Republicans at a closed-door conference meeting. A top GOP source tells NRO that Boehner urged his colleagues to resist attempts to raise tax rates. The focus, he said, should be on tax reform.

“We’ve staked out a principled position,” Boehner said, according to the source. “It’s important that everyone in this room continue to be clear with our constituents about what that position is. We’re fighting for spending cuts. We’re fighting against increases in tax rates that destroy jobs. And we’re fighting for pro-growth tax reform and entitlement reform, the keys to economic growth.”

“Letting tax rates rise on January 1 instead of cutting spending will cost jobs,” Boehner added. “We know this from the Ernst & Young study that came out back in July. We need to be calling out the Democrats in Congress who are saying ‘no’ to spending cuts, and saying we should go over the fiscal cliff.”

In his presentation, Boehner used PowerPoint slides to make his case. The slides include polling data from pollster David Winston, a longtime adviser to House leadership. You can view them here.
