Down, Down

by Jay Nordlinger

I thought I’d say something about the music at the end of Mona’s and my latest podcast. (We’re joined by Jennifer Rubin, the Washington Post blogger, and one of the brightest lights in all of American journalism.) The main topic of our discussion is this “fiscal cliff” and the momentous choice the American people made on November 6. The music is from Das Rheingold, first installment of Wagner’s great tetralogy. It is the “descent into Nibelheim,” the music that accompanies, and paints, the journey that Wotan and Loge take into the hellish depths. It is possibly the best depiction of “downwardness” in music — downwardness into something awful.

Have a good weekend!
