Anna Wintour to the Court of St. James’s?

Bloomberg News reports:

President Barack Obama is considering nominating Anna Wintour, editor-in-chief of Vogue, as his next ambassador to either the U.K. or France as he looks to reward his biggest fundraisers with embassies never out of fashion, according to two people familiar with the matter.

The British-born Wintour was one of Obama’s top bundlers, hosting several high-profile fundraisers for the president, including a $40,000-a-plate dinner at actress Sarah Jessica Parker’s Manhattan apartment. She issued a warm invitation to two lucky members of the hoi polloi to join her and Sarah Jessica:

Wintour’s “Runway to Win” project, which created an Obama-themed fashion line with items such as “Bark for Obama” dog collars by Marc Jacobs, raked in $40 million for the Obama campaign.

Presidents typically reserve plum ambassadorships for their key supporters, though Bloomberg notes that “Obama’s picks are slightly above the 30 percent average for envoys drawn from outside the career foreign service.” But would Wintour be interested? A spokeswoman from Vogue says she is “very happy with her current job.”

If the European capitals don’t tempt her, perhaps she might consider a position as ambassador to Syria, whose first lady, Asma Assad, Vogue dubbed “A Rose in the Desert” in a glowing profile of the Assads published as the bloodshed there was beginning.
