During Thanksgiving week, evangelical pastor/bestselling author Rick Warren — who you may recall delivered the invocation at President Obama’s first inauguration — called religious liberty “the civil rights issue of the next decade,” appearing on Sean Hannity’s show on Fox News. He named the Department of Health and Human Services abortion-drug, contraception, sterilization mandate as a “creeping liberty destroyer.”
“Religious freedom is our first American freedom,” he said. “It is a founding principle of our country, protected by the First Amendment in the Bill of Rights. It’s a fundamental human right, rooted in the dignity of every human person — people of any faith or no faith at all. It’s not a Catholic, Jewish, Orthodox, Mormon or Muslim issue — it’s an American issue, a civil rights issue.”
No word if Warren’s been invited back to Washington on January 20th. But he plans a religious liberty congress in June.
