Susan Rice Drops Out of Running for Secretary of State
NBC News is reporting — and the White House has confirmed, in a statement from the president — that Susan Rice has dropped out of the running for secretary of state, and will continue to serve as ambassador to the United Nations. In a letter from Rice to Obama obtained by NBC News, she wrote, “If nominated, I am now convinced that the confirmation process would be lengthy, disruptive and costly — to you and to our most pressing national and international priorities.”
The president issued a statement moments ago saying that he “accepted her decision” and believes it “demonstrates the strength of her character, and an admirable commitment to rise above the politics of the moment to put our national interests first.” President Obama also lamented “the unfair and misleading attacks on Susan Rice in recent weeks.”
It appears that Massachusetts senator John Kerry is now the top candidate for the State Department post.
