Report: Al Jazeera to Acquire Current TV

Text

The New York Times reports that Al Jazeera is “putting the final touches on a deal to take over Current TV, the low-rated cable channel that was founded by Al Gore and his business partners seven years ago.”

The deal would give Al Jazeera access to 60 million of the 100 million U.S. homes that receive cable or satellite service, and the network reportedly plans to create a new channel for broadcast in the U.S.

Al Jazeera is financed by the government of Qatar; it remains to be seen whether the network will keep Current TV hosts Jennifer Granholm, Joy Behar, and Eliot Spitzer on board if the acquisition occurs.
