NRO on Hagel

Text

The President nominated Chuck Hagel for Secretary of Defense this afternoon. Just in case you haven’t been reading National Review Online as closely as you should have been (we forgive you), here’s a recap of our articles on this terrible pick:

Against the Hagel Nomination: “At the core of his foreign policy is disdain for Israel and unquenchable desire to talk to terrorists. His realism is a pastiche of attitudes fashionable at Council on Foreign Relations meetings or the World Economic Forum in Davos, crystalized into an idée fixe lacking all nuance or true thoughtfulness.”

The Hagel Zeitgeist: “Chuck Hagel is definitively not the man who should be the next secretary of defense. And considering the problems it will create for the Obama administration should they nominate him, we trust he won’t be.”

Hagel: The Wrong Man: “Senator Hagel is the wrong man, being considered for the wrong job, at the wrong time.”

Roadblocks for Hagel: “He has also suggested that he may not be opposed to Iran’s acquisition of a nuclear weapon. ‘The genie of nuclear armaments is already out of the bottle, no matter what Iran does,’ he wrote in his book. ‘In this imperfect world, sovereign nation-states possessing nuclear weapons capability . . . will often respond with some degree of responsible, or at least sane, behavior.’”
