Ed Schultz: Chicago Gun Laws ‘Don’t Even Exist’

Text

On his radio show last week, MSNBC host Ed Schultz made the case for gun control by arguing that Chicago has so much gun violence because it doesn’t have any gun-control laws. But Chicago has some of the strictest gun-control regulations in America. Schultz claims such laws “don’t even exist” and that, compared to New York, “you’ve got two totally different numbers when it comes to lives lost.”

Schultz is right that Chicago has more gun-related violence than New York, but it’s not for lack of legislation. Residents of the city of Chicago are subject to onerous gun-control laws — the city has a ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, and requires all firearms to be registered; it had an effective ban on handgun possession until 2010. In fact, the state of Illinois has been forced to rewrite its gun laws because they were found to violate the Second Amendment. Chicago is a perfect example how gun control has completely failed to reduce violence; criminals have no problem getting their hands on firearms by circumventing or ignoring the regulations. Ed Schultz has unwittingly made the NRA’s case for it. Congratulations!
