Today would have been Martin Luther King Jr.’s 84th birthday (though the nation will mark the occasion on Monday). To celebrate King’s life and work, and as part of their ongoing “American Calendar” project, Leon and Amy Kass have put together an extraordinary collection of stories, speeches, and writings on King and the civil rights movement (including a letter from 1965 about their own experience working for civil rights in Mississippi).
The Kasses are, among many other things, co-editors (together with Diana Schaub) of What So Proudly We Hail: The American Soul in Story, Speech, and Song, and the American Calendar project is an outgrowth of that extraordinary book. They have also been putting together a curriculum of video discussions and lesson plans around a series of key American stories and songs. All are aimed at helping Americans young and old become wiser and better informed patriots, and all are very well worth your while.
