The House’s bill to lift the debt ceiling temporarily in return for Senate passage of a budget passed the Senate this afternoon with mostly Democratic votes. McConnell spokesman Don Stewart e-mails:
Leader McConnell and other Senate Republicans had several amendments aimed at forcing Washington to cut government spending, but all were defeated by Democrats. As a result, the Leader simply couldn’t support the bill. What’s needed now is a long-term solution to Washington’s out of control spending and debt. As the Leader has repeatedly said, Senate Democrats should get to work on that solution now, rather than waiting until the last minute to do the work the American people elected them to do.
