McCain: No Filibuster on Hagel

by Eliana Johnson

John McCain, who tangled with former Nebraska senator Chuck Hagel during his confirmation hearing last week, signaled yesterday that he will oppose any attempt to filibuster Hagel’s nomination. McCain told Politico, ”To vote against is entirely the judgment of each individual senator, but a filibuster I think would be inappropriate.”

McCain, who has played a leading role in the confirmation process on the Republican side, will likely kill any GOP hopes of mounting a filibuster. With the Democrats holding 55 seats in the Senate, and two Republicans — Thad Cochran and Mike Johanns — having voiced their support for Hagel, McCain’s decision appears to clear the way for Hagel to take the reins at the Pentagon.
