Senator Ayotte: ‘Our Defense Should Not Be Used as a Bargaining Chip’

by Nathaniel Botwinick

Senator Kelly Ayotte (R., N.H.) introduced a bill today to delay the implementation of sequestration until September. She insisted that “our defense should not be used as a bargaining chip because of other policy aspirations that people want to accomplish.” Rather than raising taxes, the bill would achieve the necessary savings by reducing the size of the federal workforce through attrition, as recommended by the Simpson-Bowles commission, and includes a congressional pay freeze. Senator Ayotte described the president’s proposal yesterday on sequestration as “unacceptable” and “insufficient.”
