Lesson in the Examined Life

We saw Pope Benedict XVI for one of the last times noon Sunday during his Angelus message. Again, he gives us, perhaps, a little window into his own prayer life, as he did on Monday. Talking about Jesus’s temptation in the desert, he told the 50,000-strong crowd gathered in St. Peter’s Square, “The tempter is subtle: he does not push us directly toward evil, but to a false good.” He suggested that both “in the decisive moments of life [and,] if we look closely, in every moment, we are at a crossroads: Do we want to follow the self, or God?”

He will be on retreat with curial officials all week.
