Progress Kentucky, the liberal super PAC that recently came under fire for its racially charged attacks on Senator Mitch McConnell’s wife, Elaine Chao, is still planning its first major fundraiser with Kentucky Democrats next week. While Progress Kentucky’s executive director Shawn Reilly initially refused to apologize to Elaine Chao, he caved last night under pressure and issued this statement: “We apologize to the secretary for that unnecessary comment and have deleted the tweets in question. In addition, we have put a review process in place to ensure tweets and other social-media communications from Progress Kentucky are reviewed and approved prior to posting.”
Some Kentucky Democrats have moved to distance themselves from the group, but others are remaining firm in their support. Louisville metro councilman Brent Ackerson, who is listed as a host of the fundraiser said, “At this time I’m not going to tell people to abandon Progress Kentucky or the goal (of defeating Mitch McConnell). I think at this point there are some questions to still be answered and that those questions will be posed, and from there people will judge what they’re going to continue to do.” Mr. Ackerson, when he is not working in government, is a trial lawyer who specializes in discrimination cases.
Kentucky Republicans are still waiting for their Democratic governor Steve Beshear to condemn Progress Kentucky. It remains to be seen whether Progress Kentucky will be fully abandoned by Democrats.
