Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad declared a national day of mourning for Hugo Chávez yesterday, and hinted that he had been murdered by his enemies. In a letter posted to his official website, Ahmadinejad also expressed confidence that Chávez will be resurrected:
I have no doubt that he will come again, and with all the righteous and the Prophet Jesus and the only remaining descendants of the servants, the perfect man, will come complete with peace and justice in human society, and kindness, and integrity will help.
The “perfect man” is a reference to the Hidden Imam or the twelfth Imam, Mohammed al-Mahdi, whom Shia Muslims believe will return during the apocalyptic end of days. Ahmadinejad has pledged to work on the “divine mission” of hastening the return of the Hidden Imam.
