It sounds like Oz: The Great and Powerful is having a big weekend at the box office. I can hardly hear the title without thinking of a line from Stephen King’s Pet Semetary: “Oz the Gweat and Tewwible.” If you’ve read the book, you know what I mean.

A few years ago, I wrote on the Oz phenomenon for the Wall Street Journal, with special attention to the old question about whether the original book is a parable of 1890s populism.
