Van Hollen: My Budget Balances In 2040, Too

by Nathaniel Botwinick

Representative Chris Van Hollen (D., Md.) tried to explain the Democrats’ new budget in the House on MSNBC this afternoon. Van Hollen promised that his budget will “address the long-term budget deficit” in a “balanced way,” but that it would first focus on investing in a “jobs plan.” He did not specify how Democrats would pay for this new program. Van Hollen also had some difficulty explaining why it would take until 2040 for his budget to balance, insisting that his focus was “on jobs” and “meeting commitments to seniors,” and not first and foremost on reducing the country’s debt.
