The Play’s the Thing

I don’t know if you’ve heard: Chicago and Honolulu are competing to host the Obama presidential library. The nod will almost surely go to Chicago — but the Obama team has not said no to Honolulu yet. In Impromptus today, I say I don’t much care. “I won’t be visiting that library in either case. I’m not against presidential libraries — but I’m living through this presidency, you know?”

I know you know.

A reader says this reminds him of an old story. It’s 1962, and a boy says to his veteran father, “Are you going to see The Longest Day?” “No,” says the dad. “Why not?” says the boy. The father says, “Saw the play.”
