GOP Rep: Gay Son Hasn’t Altered My Views on Marriage

by Eliana Johnson

In a local television interview over the weekend, Republican representative Matt Salmon indicated that his son’s homosexuality has not affected his views on marriage. “I don’t support gay marriage,” Salmon said.

Emphasizing his love for his son and acknowledging the many lawmakers who have declared their support for gay marriage in recent weeks, he explained, “It doesn’t mean that I don’t have respect, it doesn’t mean that I don’t sympathize with some of the issues, I just haven’t evolved to that stage.” Salmon also said he doesn’t believe that his son chose to be gay.

The Washington Post notes that Salmon’s son, also Matt Salmon, is the president of Arizona’s Log Cabin Republicans and dates Kent Flake, the second cousin of Arizona senator Jeff Flake.
