Majority of Republicans Oppose Path to Citizenship for Illegal Immigrants

Text

Any immigration bill that includes a path to citizenship will likely face stiff resistance from Republican voters, according to a new poll.

Only 35 percent of GOP voters support giving illegal immigrants a way to earn citizenship, while 60 percent oppose it, according to a Washington Post/ABC News poll released today. In contrast, 58 percent of independents and 73 percent of Democrats back eventual citizenship.

However, there might be more openness among Republicans to a bill that gives illegal immigrants legal status in the country. According to a March Pew Research Center poll, 64 percent of Republicans back allowing illegal immigrants to stay in America legally.

A Republican aide involved in the bipartisan Senate effort argues that what is crucial and most widely supported by the public in polls is thoroughly securing the border and then giving immigrants legal status.
