Second Ricin Letter Found, Bomb Squad Reported at Senate Office Building


UPDATE 1:55 p.m. Politico reports that U.S. Capitol police said they detained a person who was delivering three letters in the Senate office buildings. The person had already delivered letters to Shelby and Manchin. The suspicious envelopes tested negative for ricin, according to police.

UPDATE 1:17 p.m. U.S. Capitol public relations officer Shannell Antrobus held a brief press conference to address the earlier situation in the Senate office building. He said police are investigating ”suspicious envelopes” in both the Hart and Russell buildings. He also added that police are currently controlling access to the buildings.

Dana Bash reports that the letters that tested positive to both Obama and Senator Roger Wicker (R., Miss.) were signed ”I am KC and I approve this message.”

UPDATE 1:04 p.m. CNN’s Desjardins said Capitol Hill police have reopened the Hart Senate Office Building. She also tweeted the man with the backpack full of envelopes was taken out of the building.

UPDATE 12:35 p.m. CNN’s Lisa Desjardins reports that Capitol Hill police are questioning a man with a backpack with several envelopes:

UPDATE 12:29 p.m. At his daily press brief, Jay Carney said the FBI said there is “no indication” that there is a connection between the suspicious packages and letters and the Boston Marathon bombing. He referred reporters to the FBI for further questions on the matter.

UPDATE 12:21 p.m. ABC News is reporting that Senator Joe Manchin (D., W.Va.) has confirmed that his office in the Hart building is in quarantine. Meanwhile, Senator Carl Levin (D., Mich.) released a statement that his Saginaw regional office received a ”suspicious-looking letter” and has alerted the authorities.

A second letter containing the ricin, a highly toxic substance, has been intercepted and was allegedly intended for President Obama, according to ABC News. White House press secretary Jay Carney is expected to hold a press conference briefly regarding the news.

Also, a “suspicious package” has reportedly been found in Senator Richard Shelby’s office, and Capitol Police are evacuating parts of the Hart Senate Office Building. Politico tweeted that bomb squads are on the scene in both Hart and the Russell Senate Office Building.
