Obama: Chemical Weapons in Syria Not ‘On-or-Off Switch’

Speaking to the press during his meeting with Jordan’s King Abdullah II today, President Obama explained that, while his administration acknowledges the seriousness of the use of chemical weapons in Syria, it is still looking for more evidence before acting further.

“I’ve been very clear publicly, but also privately, for the Syrian government to utilize chemical weapons on its people crosses a line that will change my calculus on how the United States approaches these issues,” said Obama, but he said ”more direct evidence of potential use” was needed. He added that the proof thus far of chemical weapons is “not an on-or-off switch” that would automatically trigger U.S. intervention.
