Hatch Accuses IRS Official of ‘Lie of Omission’

Text

Senator Orrin Hatch charged outgoing IRS commissioner Steven Miller with leaving out information about the agency’s targeting of conservative groups in letters he wrote to the Senate. Miller knew of the IRS’s inappropriate targeting when he responded to inquires about the matter from Hatch and other members, but he provided only a technical response.

“That’s a lie by omission,” Hatch said at today’s Senate Finance Committee hearing. “There’s no question about that in my mind, it’s a lie by omission.”

Miller pushed back against the notion that he had lied, but admitted that he did know about the targeting at the time of his sending Hatch a second letter. Still, he stood by his claim that he answered the letters truthfully.
