Kiss My Glass: Scottish Pub Police Try to Ban Glass Pints

Scottish Highlanders might be old enough to drink — but they are apparently not old enough to do so from glass containers. The glass pint is already outlawed in Highlands nightclubs after 9 p.m. because of police concerns about “potential injury.” Now, reports the Telegraph, the Highland Licensing Board is proposing extending the rule to all pubs. Just as in nightclubs, glass pints would be replaced with plastic.

The infantilizing scheme has been met with outrage from publicans and patrons alike. Says pub owner Kit Fraser, “This is the nanny state at its worst, and is putting out all the wrong signals. It is as if we cannot trust the adult of the species with glass. We give plastic to children, and it should stop there.” Before long, it seems, Scots could be drinking out of these.
