Massachusetts GOP Senate Candidate: Republicans ‘Will Consider Me a Pain in the Butt’
The Republican candidate in Massachusetts’s special Senate election, Gabriel Gomez, predicted today that “in a few months from now, some in the Republican party will consider me to be a pain in the butt.”
Gomez has spent the past few days distancing himself from the Republican establishment, pointing to his support for gay marriage, immigration reform, and expanded background checks on gun purchases. The candidate describes himself as “a new kind of Republican,” and has been echoing former Massachusetts senator Scott Brown with calls for greater bipartisanship in Washington.
Gomez has remained surprisingly competitive with the heavily favored Democratic candidate, Representative Ed Markey — the Cook Political Report has deemed the race a “toss up,” and polling has had the Republican within single digits.
