The IRS’s new commissioner shot down the idea that more funding was the solution to the agency’s recent scandals, minutes after a Democratic representative had called for it.
“One of the important points I want to make is that the solution here is, in my opinion, not more money,” acting commissioner Daniel Werfel said at today’s hearing in response to Representative Jose Serrano’s comments. Serrano had earlier called for more funding to the agency to prevent future scandals.
“The solution here in this situation is to understand what controls need to be put in place, what oversight, what getting the right leadership in place, the right processes in a collective way,” Werfel continued. “The right starting point has to be what is the optimal footprint or framework for doing this right, then we sit down and figure out what the resource allocation is,” he said.
