Following a long and storied tradition of signing onto absurd causes, several Hollywood celebrities appear in a new video in support of Army private Bradley Manning, accused of leaking some 700,000 classified U.S. documents to Julian Assange’s WikiLeaks.
The video features actress Maggie Gyllenhaal, director Oliver Stone, comedian Russell Brand, and others proclaiming, “I am Bradley Manning.”
It is part of a larger “support network” that has risen to defend Manning, whose court-martial trial began this week. The group’s website proclaims “1106 DAYS OF UNJUST CONFINEMENT IS ENOUGH!” and that charges against Manning must be dropped.
Daniel Ellsberg, who leaked the Pentagon Papers to the New York Times in 1971, has come to Manning’s defense and appears in the video (“I was Bradley Manning”). With friends like that . . .
