Governor Chris Christie’s special-election decision irked some Republicans, but Jeff Chiesa, his pick to serve as an interim senator, may impress his critics.
“I’m a conservative Republican,” Chiesa said today.
Beyond that, Chiesa’s politics are hard to read, though on immigration, he told reporters that border security needs to come first.
Chiesa, who currently serves as the state’s attorney general, previously worked as a federal prosecutor and Christie’s counsel. He holds degress from Notre Dame and Catholic University’s law school. According to my Trenton sources, he’s also a family man and a practicing Roman Catholic.
We’ll have to wait and see whether he’s a Pat Toomey-type Northeast conservative, or an Olympia Snowe-type Republican.
