Poll: Americans Strongly Favor Federalist Approach to Gay Marriage

A recent New York Times/CBS News poll finds that Americans overwhelmingly believe that gay marriage ought to be dealt with at the state level. Sixty percent of respondents believe that the issue should be left to the states, while only 33 percent believe it should be decided on the federal level.

This pattern holds true even for supporters of gay marriage, 57 percent of whom believe that the issue should be left to the states to decide, while only 38 percent believe it to be a federal issue.

The Supreme Court is expected to rule in the coming weeks on two key gay-marriage cases, regarding the Defense of Marriage Act and California’s Proposition 8.
