You know, I think I owe Mitt Romney an apology. He said over and over again during the debates “ Our plan was a state solution to a state problem” and therefore wouldn’t work on the national level. I always took this for a dodge, a way to cloak his natural technocratic instincts with states’ rights platitudes. But Avik Roy has an excellent piece today making the case that Romney was right. RomneyCare really was a plan geared solely for Massachusetts’ unique problems (that doesn’t mean, however, that it was a great solution). Read the piece to get the explanation. But, speaking of explanations, I think one reason so many of us doubted Romney on this claim is that he never went beyond the bumper sticker defense. Anyway, no one wants to rehash all of that.
