Grassley on FBI Drone Usage: ‘The Right of Privacy Is at Stake’

by Will Allen

In an interview with The Situation Room, Senator Charles Grassley declared that “The right of privacy is at stake,” following today’s revelation that the FBI uses drones for domestic surveillance.  In a Judiciary Committee hearing, the Iowa Republican asked FBI Director Robert Mueller, “Does the FBI own or currently use drones, and if so, for what purpose?”  Mueller responded, “Yes, and for surveillance”; he added that “our footprint is very small, we have very few [drones] and have limited use.” When asked by CNN whether the Bureau’s drone usage was known to the Senate before today’s hearing, Grassley responded, “Absolutely not.”  He has sent a letter to the FBI requesting details on the extent of domestic drone surveillance.
