Biden: ‘Malarkey’ Is a Spanish Word

by Andrew Johnson

One of Joe Biden’s favorite words has Spanish roots, according to the vice president, and it isn’t “literally.”

“All this stuff you’ve heard the last six months about the astronomical costs of immigration reform, it’s a bunch of malarkey,” Biden said yesterday in remarks on immigration. “That’s a Spanish word,” he assured the audience.

According to Merriam-Webster, the origins of “malarkey” are unknown, but the dictionary surmises that it has Irish-American roots.

If the vice president is looking for a Spanish word with similar meanings, paparruchas or majaderías would be more appropriate.
