A group of abortion advocates in Texas dressed in early 20th century costumes to make a point in Texas yesterday. In long skirts, broad hats, and sashes saying “Votes for Women,” they implied that abortion is a logical extension of the franchise. The conflation of abortion with women’s rights is of recent vintage though. Many of the original feminists and suffragettes abhored abortion (while also considering that the men who impregnate women deserve equal blame for the crime). Susan B. Anthony referred to abortion as “child murder” and warned that a woman who resorted to it would feel the “burden” on her conscience forever. “But, oh, thrice guilty is he who drove her to the desperation which impelled her to the crime.”
Rights for women, by all means — including unborn women.
