Green Cards for Gay Couples

by Lindsey Grudnicki

Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano issued a statement on Monday announcing that the ban on immigration visas for same-sex spouses has been lifted.

After the Supreme Court struck down Section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act last week, “President Obama directed federal departments to ensure the decision and its implication for federal benefits for same-sex legally married couples are implemented swiftly and smoothly,” Napolitano stated. She therefore instructed U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services to review green card applications filed by gay couples.

At least two same-sex couples have already had their petitions approved for U.S. residency permits.
