Grimes Announces Run Against McConnell, Fumbles First Press Conference

by Lindsey Grudnicki

Kentucky Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes announced Monday that she will be running against Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell in 2014.

The press has already noted that Grimes’s campaign rollout was not exactly an energetic start for an underdog candidate. The Washington Post lists some of the “puzzling” aspects of Monday’s press conference, including the presence of her 2011 secretary of state campaign banner, the lack of promotion on social media prior to the announcement, the absence of an official campaign website, and the fact that Grimes informed her advisers of her decision at a last-minute meeting and was over half an hour late for her five-minute press conference.

Grimes hopes to oust McConnell from a seat that he has held since 1985. She also faces the daunting task of running as a Democrat in a state where less than 40 percent of the population voted for Obama in 2012.

Team Mitch released a video in response to Grimes’s announcement:

The Corner

The one and only.
