A Democratic representative condemned Republicans for separating food stamps from the farm bill by recalling Mitt Romney’s “47 percent” comment this afternoon.
“This is a shame,” Corrine Brown of Florida shouted on the House floor. “Mitt Romney was right: You all do not care about the 47 percent. Shame on you!”
Brown’s comments actually came after an extended debate over the appropriateness of her comments, and made up the second part of her one-minute floor speech. Her speech was initially interrupted when a Republican requested that her words be stricken from the record because she violated House rules by addressing specific members.
After ten minutes of commotion in the chamber to examine her actions, the request was withdrawn and Brown was allowed to resume her comments.
The agriculture-only farm bill passed in the House earlier this afternoon with a 216–208 vote.
