MSNBC Guest on ‘Stand Your Ground’ Laws: ‘Humiliating’ to Blacks, Latinos
During its nonstop coverage and analysis of the George Zimmerman trial, an MSNBC guest said that Stand Your Ground self-defense laws such as Florida’s are “humiliating” to minorities and “putting them in physical danger.”
“One of the things that people are looking for in this case is, as a nation, are we going to pay attention to the fact that 24 states have ‘Stand Your Ground’ laws? Sometimes they’re called ‘Make My Day’ laws,” civil-rights attorney Maya Wiley said on The Cycle yesterday. “Those are some of the conditions that are producing really what I would call a process of humiliating people who are black, people who are Latino, and putting them in physical danger like Trayvon was in.”
Wiley and host Touré also pointed to the high unemployment rate and other economic issues for the black community as factors in the tension surrounding the case.
