Reid on Nuclear Option in 2008: ‘It Would Ruin Our Country,’ ‘Black Chapter’ in Senate History

by Andrew Johnson

Harry Reid’s views on employing the “nuclear option” in the filibuster changes have apparently evolved since 2008, when he vowed never to bring it up for debate. “As long as I’m the leader, the answer is no,” Reid said in a 2008 C-SPAN interview.

Reid told his Democratic predecessor Tom Daschle, who was conducting the interview, that if Republicans moved forward with the rule change, it would have been “a black chapter in the history of the Senate.”

“I think we should just forget that,” the Nevada senator said. “I hope we never ever ever get to that again.”
