“We are committed to standing with the people of Sanford, with the individuals and families affected by this incident,” Eric Holder told an audience of Delta Sigma Theta soriority members in Washington, D.C. He assured them that the Department of Justice will continue to investigate the shooting death of Trayvon Martin and potentially file charges against George Zimmerman.
“We will never stop working to ensure that in every case, in every circumstance, and in every community, justice must be done,” he said.
Putting the legal issues aside, Holder said Martin’s death is an opportunity to discuss “mistaken beliefs and stereotypes that serve as the basis for these too common incidents.” He told the audience that the “complicated and emotionally-charged issues that this case has raised” need to be addressed and not overlooked as they “have [been] too often in the past.”
Holder is also speaking tomorrow at the NAACP convention in Orlando, Fla. tomorrow and is expected to address the Zimmerman case again.
