U.K. Student Denied Water for Fear of Offending Fasting Muslim Peers

by Ian Tuttle

Water, water everywhere, but not a drop to drink. At least if you’re a student at Charles Dickens Primary School in Portsmouth, Hampshire, across the pond. On what was one of the hottest days of the year to-date, ten-year-old Luke Blagden was not allowed to have a drink of water for fear that it might offend Muslim classmates fasting during Ramadan.

Kora Blagden, Luke’s mother, told the Belfast Telegraph that her son returned home last Thursday complaining of dehydration and reported that his teacher had not allowed him to drink from his water bottle, saying it would be “teasing” the other students.

Mrs. Blagden complained to school officials, who apologized to mother and son.
