Krauthammer’s Take: ‘The Media’s Attempt To Turn’ Zimmerman Trial ‘Into A Racial Incident Is Disgraceful’

Text

Charles Krauthammer decried the media coverage of the George Zimmerman’s trial and subsequent acquittal as “disgraceful” and as “a travesty.” Speaking on Special Report earlier today, Krauthammer argued that the trial was entirely fair and transparent. “For all those who want to make this into a racial incident” he asked, “where was the racial taint in those hours and hours of that travesty?”

Krauthammer also addressed the characterizations of the shooting of Trayvon Martin as a major civil-rights crime, comparable to the 1955 lynching of Emmett Till. Krauthammer dismissed such comparisons, calling them “a desecration of the memory of Emmett Till, who was a victim of real, brutal racism, in a country that at the time had legalized racism.”

Krauthammer went on to criticize the media’s “disgraceful” complicity in politicizing and racializing a tragedy. In particular, Krauthammer pointed to CNN’s “absurd” description of Zimmerman as a “white Hispanic,” to signal his half-white, half-Hispanic background. He argued that this invented description was used only to strengthen the traditional narrative of “white-on-black” racist violence.
