Coverage of Today’s Trayvon Martin Rally

by Will Allen

Stay tuned to the Corner for periodic updates on Al Sharpton’s “Justice for Trayvon” demonstration, which kicks off at noon today in various American cities. I’m at One Police Plaza in New York City, where Sharpton and Martin’s mother and brother are set to address protesters at noon.

I spoke this morning with an organizer from Sharpton’s National Action Network, who told me that Sharpton’s weekly rally at his east Harlem headquarters drew more than 2,000 participants. He expects a considerably larger audience at the noon rally. When I arrived at half past ten, the plaza was nearly empty, but it quickly began to fill. The crowd is mostly black and greatly varied in age; there are a few white protesters, mostly middle-aged or older.
