Filner Enters Therapy, and Tenth Accuser Steps Forward

by Sterling Beard

San Diego mayor Bob Filner entered therapy on Monday, just a few days after a tenth woman came forward and alleged that he’d sexually harassed her — at a church.

Filner arrived at an undisclosed location to begin his therapy this week, ABC 10 News in San Diego reports. The therapy, which Filner had previously announced he was planning to go through, is set to last two weeks and he’s scheduled to return to work on August 19.

Meanwhile, Renee Estill-Sombright alleged over the weekend that Filner harassed her at a breakfast at La Jolla Presbyterian Church in June. She’d met Filner once before and tried to reintroduce herself at a church event, a fundraiser for a group that aids African refugees. She says Filner grabbed both of her hands and held on, telling her “You are so beautiful and I cannot take my eyes off of you.”

Taken aback, Estill-Sombright thanked him for the compliment, but Filner proceeded to ask if she was married, and then said, “This is a personal invitation. I would like to take you out sometime.”

Filner, meanwhile, is also embroiled in a pair of lawsuits, one launched by his former communications director alleging sexual harassment, the other launched by the San Diego City Council to recover any municipal funds spent defending him in court (Filner argues that the city ought to foot his legal bills because it never provided him with legally mandated sexual-harassment training).

An effort is now underway to collect the nearly 102,000 petition signatures necessary to initiate a mayoral recall election.
