Booker, Lonegan Win

by Robert Costa

On Tuesday, the primary contests for New Jersey’s special Senate election were won by the longtime frontrunners. On the Democratic side, Newark mayor Cory Booker coasted to victory, and former Bogota mayor Steve Lonegan won the Republican nomination. They’ll battle this November:

Their victories in the odd late-summer primary, on a day when downpours swamped parts of the state, came amid reports of anemic voter turnout. After a short primary campaign, the Lonegan and Booker will run a similarly brief sprint to the special general election. Gov. Christie set the unusual election dates in early June after longtime Democratic Sen. Frank Lautenberg died in office.

For Lonegan, especially, it was a big night. Over the past decade, he has run and lost gubernatorial primaries and struggled, at times, to win suppport from the Garden State GOP. But now, for the first time, he has won a statewide primary.
