Former Bush Aides Run GOP Syria Briefing
With the experience of the Iraq War looming over a fierce debate about whether to intervene in Syria, some of the architects of that conflict are on Capitol Hill pushing Republicans to act again.
Former George W. Bush aides Stephen Hadley and Eric Edelman led a staff briefing for Republican chiefs of staff and legislative directors on the Hill this week, National Review has learned.
Three top Eric Cantor hands, Steve Stombres, Neil Bradley, and Chris Vieson, hosted the briefing, and Tim Berry, Kevin McCarthy’s chief of staff, was present as well. The group said leadership would not be formally whipping the Syria vote; since the vote will likely lead to a loss of life, it’s considered a matter of conscience.
The well-attended briefing did not prompt mass conversions among skeptical House aides.
